During a check-up you can expect to have a thorough visual check by the dentist, along with questions about your diet, lifestyle and general health. On some occasions the dentist make take x-rays, (generally every 2 years) this is a routine procedure and helps to identify any potential problems that may be ‘developing’ underneath fillings or in-between your teeth. The dentist may also suggest a visit to the dental hygienist.

Hygienist Services

Our hygienists at Acorn Dental dedicate time and expertise to give you individual knowledge on how to prevent and manage gum disease based on your specific needs, especially where there is overcrowding, dentures, bridge work, crowns and implants. This may include advice on brushing technique, flossing, interdental cleaning, and any other tips and advice unique to you.

Although our dentists able to do basic cleaning, the hygienist can offer specialist techniques and detailed instruction. This means deep cleaning can take place using specialist equipment (called an ultrasonic) which removes both sticky bacterial plaque from below the gum line and hardened calculus which causes bleeding gums and recession, leading to tooth loss.

As well as leaving with knowledge on how to protect your teeth you’ll also leave with a wonderfully refreshing clean feeling in your mouth.

Children’s Dentistry

The best thing a parent can do for a child is to help them feel safe and confident, and where a visit to the dentist is concerned this means as soon as your child has a tooth bring them in! At Acorn Dental we find letting them explore and have fun is the best approach, which is why they’re encouraged to read the story books in reception, have a ride in the chair (no ticket required), meet the dentist, chose a sticker and a balloon with the nurse, and generally associate a trip to the dentist as a enjoyable thing to do.

Call Acorn Dental today to register your child for their check-up and avoid unnecessary anxiety and upset in the future.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water, it’s also found in certain foods, including tea and fish. Its main benefit is in helping reduce the risk of tooth decay, which is why it’s added to many brands of toothpaste and, in some areas, to the water supply.

For some children extra help is needed to help protect against tooth decay so we use a fluoride varnish treatment. The varnish contains high levels of fluoride and is painted onto the surface of both baby and adult teeth to strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay.

Fissure Sealing

A safe and painless way to protect your child’s teeth from decay. A protective plastic coating is applied to the biting surface of the back teeth (molars & premolars) to stop food and bacteria sticking to the tiny grooves which occur naturally in the teeth. This is applied as soon as the adult teeth start to come through, usually between 6 & 7 years of age, and is a straightforward treatment for your child to experience.
