Root Canal Treatment in Birmingham, Solihull and Bromsgrove

If you are experiencing persistent throbbing pain, sensitivity to heat, or swelling around a tooth, it is essential to seek a professional assessment immediately. At Acorn Dental, we understand that “root canal” can be a daunting term, but it is actually a routine, pain-relieving procedure designed to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Identifying and treating an internal infection early is the most effective way to protect your dental alignment and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Dont delay – modern techniques allow us to fix the infection comfortably and restore your tooth to full function.

Why Choose Acorn Dental for Root Canal Treatment?

The primary goal of a root canal is to eliminate pain, not cause it. We use advanced local anaesthetics and gentle techniques to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as a standard filling. For particularly nervous patients, we also offer IV sedation.

Root canal treatment involves cleaning the tiny, complex channels inside your tooth. Our team uses high-magnification dental microscopes and digital apex locators to ensure every part of the infection is removed with microscopic precision.

Saving your natural tooth is always our priority. A successful root canal prevents the need for dental implants or bridges by maintaining your original tooth structure, which helps keep your bite stable and your jawbone healthy.

Once the infection is cleared and the canal is sealed, we often protect the tooth with a bespoke crown or onlay. This ensures the tooth remains strong enough for daily chewing while looking completely natural and seamless.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is necessary when the pulp (the blood vessels and nerve supply) of a tooth becomes infected due to decay or injury. If the pulp becomes infected, the infection can spread through the tooth’s root canal system and potentially lead to an abscess. If left untreated, the infection can worsen, and in some cases, the tooth may need to be extracted.

Root canal treatment aims to save the tooth by removing the infected tissue and preventing further damage. At Acorn Dental, our goal is to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, and root canal therapy can be an effective way to do so.

The Procedure

Root canal treatment involves exposing the tooth’s root system to access the infected pulp. Once the area is accessible, the dentist will remove the nerves and tissue within the root. To prevent future infection, a special biocompatible material is placed into the root canals. This material hardens and expands over time, filling the space and creating a seal that keeps bacteria from reinfecting the tooth.

Once the root canal is sealed, the tooth is filled and restored to its normal function. In most cases, the treated tooth will need a crown to ensure it remains strong and fully functional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.

Why is a root canal treatment needed?

If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. A local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done. At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

What will my tooth look like after root canal treatment?

In the past, a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.

What if it happens again?

Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated.

What if I don’t have root canal treatment?

The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.

Will the tooth be safe after the treatment?

Yes. However, it is better to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
