What to do if your child
needs dental care

Children Dentistry in Birmingham, Barnt Green & Solihull

A child’s early experiences at the dentist shape their attitude toward oral health for the rest of their lives. Whether it is their very first check-up, a concern about “wobbly” teeth, or a sports-related injury, it is essential to seek a professional team that understands the unique needs of developing smiles. At Acorn Dental, we believe in “Positive Prevention.” Identifying issues like early decay or alignment habits now prevents complex problems in adulthood. Don’t delay—starting dental visits as soon as the first tooth appears ensures your child grows up with a confident, healthy, and fearless smile.

Why Book Your Child’s Dental Consultation at Acorn Dental?

We focus on making the dental chair a fun place to be. Our assessments are designed to be quick, gentle, and interactive, using simple language that children can understand and enjoy.

We offer protective solutions like Fissure Sealants—a thin, protective coating applied to the permanent molars to “seal out” decay—and professional Fluoride Varnish to strengthen developing enamel.

During every check-up, we monitor how your child’s jaw is developing. Early detection of crowding or bite issues allows us to refer you for orthodontic advice at the optimal time for the best results.

Our clinicians are specifically trained to work with nervous children. We move at your child’s pace, using “Tell-Show-Do” techniques to ensure they feel in control and comfortable throughout their visit.

How to Support Your Child’s Smile at Home

While our team provides the clinical care, these steps are vital for building healthy habits between visits:

  • The “Two-Minute” Game: Use a timer or a fun song to ensure your child brushes for the full two minutes, focusing on every surface of their teeth.

  • Supervised Brushing: Children usually need help or supervision with brushing until at least age seven to ensure they are reaching the back molars effectively.

  • Sugar-Smart Snacking: Limit sugary snacks and acidic juices to mealtimes only, as frequent “grazing” on sugar is the primary cause of childhood cavities.

  • Be “Dentist Positive”: Use encouraging language when talking about the dentist. Avoid using the dentist as a threat for not brushing, as this builds unnecessary anxiety.

  • Book a “Getting to Know Us” Visit: Schedule a routine check-up early so your child can meet our team in a relaxed, non-emergency environment.

Our Dentists Will Protect Your Child’s Smile

At Acorn Dental, we believe that every child deserves a cavity-free childhood. Our dentists will lead your child’s care, starting with a comprehensive but gentle examination of their teeth, gums, and jaw development.

We focus heavily on Preventative Education, showing your child exactly how to brush effectively in a way that feels like a game rather than a chore. If treatment is needed, such as a white filling or a numbing-free repair, we use the most gentle techniques possible to ensure the experience is stress-free. Our goal is to work alongside parents to create a stable, healthy foundation, ensuring your child grows up with a smile they are proud to share.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take my child for their first dental appointment?

We recommend bringing your child to see us as soon as their first primary tooth erupts, or by their first birthday at the latest. These early visits are about “familiarisation”—getting them used to the sights, sounds, and smells of the practice so they feel completely at home.

What are fissure sealants and are they necessary?

Fissure sealants are a highly effective way to prevent cavities. They are a clear or tooth-coloured resin “shield” applied to the deep grooves of the back teeth where most decay starts. It is a quick, pain-free process that doesn’t involve any drilling and can protect teeth for many years.

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

This is a dental emergency. Handle the tooth by the “crown” (the white part), not the root. If possible, gently place it back in the socket; if not, keep it in a small container of milk and contact Acorn Dental immediately. Quick action within the first hour gives us the best chance of saving the tooth.
