What to do if you need
a sinus lift

Worn & Shortened Teeth in Birmingham, Barnt Green & Solihull

If you have been missing teeth in your upper jaw for some time, the bone in that area naturally thins, and the maxillary sinus—the air-filled space above your teeth—can expand downwards. This often leaves insufficient bone height to safely support a dental implant. At Acorn Dental, a “Sinus Lift” (or Sinus Augmentation) is a routine specialist procedure designed to gently move the sinus membrane upwards and add new bone. Don’t delay—a sinus lift is the key to unlocking the possibility of permanent dental implants for patients who were previously told it wasn’t an option.

Why Choose Acorn Dental for a Sinus Lift?

We never guess with your anatomy. We use advanced 3D scans to measure the exact millimetres of bone available and the health of your sinus cavity, ensuring a safe and predictable outcome.

A sinus lift is a delicate procedure. Our clinicians are highly trained in “microsurgical” techniques, using gentle tools to lift the sinus membrane and place high-quality bone-grafting material with minimal trauma.

In many cases, if there is enough existing bone for initial stability, we can perform the sinus lift and place the dental implant during the same appointment, saving you time and reducing the number of surgical visits.

We prioritise your comfort. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and for more anxious patients, we offer IV sedation to ensure you are completely relaxed throughout.

Post-Operative Instructions Following Sinus Surgery at Acorn Dental

After undergoing sinus surgery, it’s crucial to follow specific post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. In addition to the standard instructions provided, here are important guidelines specific to sinus surgery recovery.

Key Considerations for Your Recovery:

  • Sneezing: If you need to sneeze, do so with your mouth open to prevent unnecessary pressure on the sinus area.

  • No Nose Blowing: Refrain from blowing your nose for at least one week to avoid disturbing the surgical site.

  • Avoid Certain Actions: For five days after surgery, do not smoke, use a straw, or spit, as these actions can create pressure and delay healing.

  • Wind Instruments: Avoid playing wind instruments until you have been cleared by your surgeon.

  • Flying and Scuba Diving: Avoid flying and scuba diving during the recovery period, as changes in pressure could affect the healing process.

  • Air Flow Sensation: If you feel airflow at the surgical site, please contact our office immediately for guidance.

  • Congestion Relief: If you experience congestion, over-the-counter antihistamines or decongestants such as Sudafed or Otrivine may help relieve symptoms. Always follow the recommendations provided by your healthcare provider.

  • Avoid Touching the Surgical Area: Do not lift the lip with your fingers to inspect the surgical site. This could accidentally tear the sutures, open the incision, and impede your recovery.

  • Bleeding: It is normal to experience some bleeding from the nostril on the side of the surgery. If this happens, gently blot the nose. Avoid blowing your nose, as this could worsen the bleeding.

For any concerns during your recovery or if you experience unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact our team at Acorn Dental. With practices in Moseley, Barnt Green and Blythe Valley Park, we’re here to provide the support you need throughout your healing journey.

Our Dentists Will Build Your Smile’s Foundation

At Acorn Dental, we believe every patient deserves a fixed, confident smile. Our dentists will lead your sinus lift care, starting with a comprehensive Airtightness and Bone Quality Review. During the procedure, the sinus membrane is gently “lifted,” and a sophisticated bone-grafting material is placed into the space. Over several months, your body naturally replaces this material with your own living bone, creating a solid, permanent anchor for your future dental implants. By focusing on the structural integrity of your upper jaw, we ensure your restorative journey is built on a foundation that is designed to last a lifetime.
