Periodontal Therapy in Birmingham, Barnt Green & Solihull

Periodontal therapy is a dedicated series of treatments designed to halt the progression of gum disease and encourage your tissues to reattach to your teeth. When standard hygiene is no longer enough, this therapy targets the “hidden” bacteria residing deep within the gum pockets.

At Acorn Dental, we don’t just “clean” your teeth; we perform a clinical debridement of the root surfaces to eliminate the source of infection. Don’t delay—completing your therapy cycle is the only way to shrink gum pockets, stop bone loss, and ensure your smile has a stable, infection-free foundation.

Why Choose Acorn Dental for Periodontal Therapy?

We use specialised ultrasonic and hand instruments to smooth the root surfaces beneath the gum line. By removing the calcified tartar (calculus) that harbours bacteria, we create a biocompatible surface that allows your gums to heal and “tighten” around the tooth.

In areas with particularly deep pocketing, we can apply targeted antimicrobial gels directly into the site. This slow-release medication fights the infection exactly where it starts, significantly improving the healing response.

Our therapists often work under high-power magnification or with specialised loupes. This allows them to see and remove tiny deposits of infection that would be missed by standard cleaning methods.

We recognise that deep cleaning can be sensitive. We use equipment that utilises warmed water and fine-powder technology to ensure the process is as gentle and comfortable as possible.

How to Support Your Therapy at Home

The success of periodontal therapy depends on your “co-therapy” at home. Between your clinical sessions, follow these essential steps:

  • Disrupt the Biofilm: Use the specific interdental brush sizes assigned to you by your therapist at least once a day to ensure the newly cleaned pockets stay free of bacteria.

  • Avoid “Rinsing Away” Treatment: If your therapist applies a localised medicinal gel or rinse, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes to allow the treatment to work deep within the gums.

  • Gentle Mechanical Cleaning: Your gums may feel slightly tender after therapy; continue to brush gently with a soft electric toothbrush to keep the area clean without causing irritation.

  • Monitor for Healing Signs: Look for positive changes such as a reduction in bleeding, gums changing from “puffy red” to “firm pink,” and a decrease in persistent bad breath.

  • Stick to the Schedule: Periodontal therapy is often delivered in stages; ensuring you attend every scheduled session is vital to prevent the bacteria from recolonising.

Our Therapists Will Stabilise Your Gum Health

At Acorn Dental, we treat periodontal therapy as a restorative journey for your gums. Our therapists will lead your care, starting with a review of your Full Mouth Disclosing Map to ensure no areas of plaque are overlooked. The therapy itself involves Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment, where we meticulously clean the roots of your teeth in sections to ensure total bacterial removal. We don’t just treat the infection; we empower you with the specific techniques and tools needed to keep the disease dormant. Our goal is to move you from a state of active gum loss to a “Maintenance Phase,” where your smile remains strong, fresh, and secure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

Periodontal therapy is typically delivered in 2 to 4 sessions, depending on the severity of the infection. This allows us to focus deeply on specific quadrants of your mouth and gives the tissue time to begin healing between appointments.

Is the treatment painful?

Because we are cleaning deep beneath the gum line, we often use a local anaesthetic or a specialised “numbing gel” to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout the process. Most patients report feeling a sense of “lightness” and cleanliness in their gums afterwards.

What happens after the therapy is finished?

Once the initial “active” therapy is complete, we wait 8 to 12 weeks for your tissues to heal before performing a “Re-evaluation” scan. If the pockets have shrunk and the bleeding has stopped, you will move to a regular Periodontal Maintenance schedule to keep the infection from returning.
