Prevention is key when it comes to your dental health. Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to catch potential problems early, making treatment more straightforward or even preventing it altogether. While some patients may need dental check-ups every 6 months, your dentist may recommend intervals between 4 months and 2 years, depending on your individual needs.

NHS Dental Treatments in Birmingham

At Acorn Dental, we are proud to offer NHS dental services for eligible patients at our Moseley practice.

You may qualify for free NHS dental treatment if you:

• Are under 18
• Are under 19 and in full-time education
• Are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
• Receive certain benefits, such as Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
• Hold a valid HC2 certificate (full help with health costs)
• You may be entitled to partial help with dental costs if you hold an HC3 certificate.

NHS dental charges (from 1 April 2026)

From 1 April 2026, NHS dental fees will increase by an average of 1.7%. The current charges for the three standard treatment bands will be:

Band 1 (check-ups, diagnosis, preventive care): £27.90

Band 2 (fillings, extractions, root canal treatment): £76.60

Band 3 (crowns, dentures, bridges, and more complex work): £332.10

Dental Check-ups

During your check-up, our dentists will perform a thorough visual examination, ask about your diet, lifestyle, and general health, and may take x-rays (usually every two years) to check for potential problems that might not be visible. This routine procedure helps us identify any issues developing beneath fillings or between teeth. If needed, your dentist may also recommend a visit to our dental hygienist for specialised care.

Hygienist Services

Our dedicated hygienists at Acorn Dental offer expert advice and tailored services to prevent and manage gum disease, especially for patients with overcrowding, dentures, bridge work, crowns, or implants. You will receive personalised tips on brushing techniques, flossing, and interdental cleaning.

Our hygienists provide specialist techniques, including ultrasonic deep cleaning, to remove bacterial plaque from below the gum line and hardened calculus. This helps prevent gum bleeding, recession, and tooth loss. After a visit to the hygienist, you’ll leave with refreshed teeth and the knowledge to maintain optimal oral health.

Children’s Dentistry

The best way to ensure your child feels comfortable at the dentist is by introducing them early! At Acorn Dental, we make visits fun and engaging. We encourage children to explore our waiting area, read storybooks, take a ride in the chair, meet the dentist, and choose a sticker. This helps build positive associations with dental visits, making future appointments easier and less stressful.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water and certain foods, like tea and fish. It plays a crucial role in preventing tooth decay, which is why it’s often added to toothpaste and, in some areas, to the water supply. For children who may need extra protection, Acorn Dental uses fluoride varnish treatments to strengthen tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.

Fissure Sealing

Fissure sealing is a quick, safe, and painless way to protect your child’s back teeth from decay. A special plastic coating is applied to the biting surfaces of molars and premolars, preventing food and bacteria from sticking to the grooves in the teeth. This procedure is typically performed when adult teeth start to emerge, usually around 6 or 7 years of age, and is an easy treatment for children to undergo.
